Work From Home Basics

Many people believe they know what benefits they get when they work from home. No shifts, no commuting, no time limitations. There are only deadlines that you have to manage within your working hours. However, they also tend to overestimate the usefulness of working from home. We provide here some basics about working from home that should give one the complete picture.

Working from home may mean telecommuting for an employer or actually running a home-based business. While working from home, you may either work entirely from home or do some work at home while the rest is done at the employer or client’s site.

Many people prefer to work from home, as they believe they will be able to achieve a better balance between their family life and work life. They hope that they will be able to work with less interruption, have more flexibility in their working hours and also save time and money that they would have otherwise spent on commuting. Of course, working from home also benefits the environment and reduces the demand for natural resources – fewer cars on the road cause less pollution and reduce the demand for fuel.

Employers also benefit by allowing their employees to work from home. They can save money on office and equipment costs and also be able to hire qualified workers who would otherwise have been unavailable to them.

There are however some downsides to working from home. Many parents who have young children to take care of believe that working from home is their best option. However, studies have shown that if employees who work from home have any kids under the age of 18, they will need to spend more time taking care of their children and will effectively reduce their work time by about one day per week. This is one of the reasons why some employers insist that employees who telecommute or work from home have some designated child care plans. In fact, workers may even find that contrary to what they had hoped, working from home brings in far more interruptions in their family life than working from nine-to-five in an office. They realize that clients and employers expect them to work beyond normal business hours, or even when they are sick.

It therefore becomes very important that any employee who is considering working from home, weigh all the pros and cons to understand what benefits they may realistically hope to derive.
