A home-based business caring for lawns is not difficult to start. Its start up cost is not even high; however, it depends on the types of lawn services you would like to offer. In North America each year, millions of homeowners hire experts to have their lawn maintained and cared for.

Among the lawn services are mowing, sprinkling maintenance, landscaping, fertilization and weed control. Deciding on your niche is important to avoid confusion and misunderstanding. You can also decide which equipment you should buy once you are done with your niche.

For smaller lawns, you can either use lawn mower or grass cutter. At times, some residents own their own lawn mower. If such is the case, you can ask them if they prefer that you use their mower or yours. There are homeowners who rather have their mowers be used in maintaining their lawn.

However, there are also homeowners who do not have their own mowers. And for such reason, they hire an expert to have their lawn cut professionally. In such case, you should be ready with your equipment.

There are two types of markets that you can serve with your home-based business. You can choose to cater to residential sectors, commercial sectors or both. In most cases, newbie entrepreneurs are encourage to serve both.

If you have the ability to design landscaping, you can also add such service to your niche. In most cases, lawn care givers hire laborers to work on the landscaping project that you designed. The laborers are expected to bring their own tools at the working area.
So, there is no need for you to buy new ones.

Freelancers on this home-based business do not need a business permit to operate. But if you have professional licenses as a contractor or any related license, these can work to your advantage as clients have more confidence in your ability, particularly in landscaping.

If you do not have any licenses, you can work on your portfolio. It is already given that engaging in lawn care business requires skills, previous experience or knowledge. Hence, to start with your portfolio, you can take photos of your previous projects.

If it is impossible, then you can work on your lawn–clean it, design it or beautify it–then take photos. Should this option is even impossible; you can put your landscape design on a 3D presentation or graphics, and then print them.

Marketing is important for you home-based business undertaking. It is the soul of your business. Plan carefully on how you should promote your lawn care services. Methodologies include printing business cards, flyers, postcards, brochures that showcase your talents and services.

You can also advertise on the classified ads section on your local newspapers. Even on the internet, there are sites that are in the nature of advertisement. You can post your advertisement for free on these classified ads sites.

Another effective promotion is through social media networking. FaceBook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Flickr, Twitter allow you to publish photos of your works, or links to the sites where you posted your photos.
