New FTC Rules About Blogging Endorsements
By Jane Dawson
The United States Federal Trade Commission recently announced revised guidelines that require bloggers and other online commentators to disclose when they receive payment or free products from advertisers whose products they endorse. The guidelines were developed to provide advertisers and endorsers with information about how to comply with the Federal Trade Commission Act, which sets rules regarding endorsement and testimonial ads. The revisions go into effect December 1, 2009.
The revised guidelines make it a requirement that bloggers and other word-of-mouth marketers disclose any substantive material connection they have with the provider of a product or service they endorse. A blogger who makes an endorsement must disclose the material connections they share with the seller of the product or service. Parties found in violation of that law following an FTC investigation can face federal court-issued civil penalties of up to $16,000 per violation.
Online retailers should note that both bloggers and advertisers can be held liable under the FTC Act for endorsements that make false or unsubstantiated claims, or if they fail to disclose material connections.
The revised guidelines address several specific examples of content.
1. If a blogger claims that a product or service has provided an unusual level of benefit, the blogger must also describe what users in general would likely receive as a benefit. For example, if a weight lifter claims that supplement he takes has created a 40% increase in the amount of weight he can lift, he may also have to note that his results were unusual and the usual benefit would be a 15% increase in weight lifting capacity.
2. If an advertiser refers in an ad to the findings of a research report it sponsored, the advertiser must disclose its relationship with the organization that conducted the research. For example, if Acme Pest Control Co. announces in an ad that XYZ Research Inc. found Acme’’s pest control system to be three times better than any comparable system on the market and Acme Pest Control sponsored that research, the relationship between Acme and XYZ must be disclosed in the advertising.
It is not yet entirely clear how comprehensively the rules will be enforced by the FTC. The agency is taking questions now and will offer a Q&A page on their site for additional information.
At a minimum, online retailers need to do several things:
- Disclose your relationship to your product if you recommend that product on any other site.
- Require bloggers to make disclosures about their relationships with advertisers
- Require bloggers to agree to delete online content whenever it makes claims that neither the blogger nor the advertiser can back up.
While the FTC only regulates U.S. e-commerce, online retailers in other countries should pay serious attention; U.S. policy has a significant influence across the Internet; this initiative may well be the start of an international swing towards greater transparency for consumers.

Is Your eBusiness Ready For Web 3.0?
By Jane Dawson
Do you find yourself wondering about the various Web version terms that you hear used? Have you sort of figured out that Web 2.0 has to do with social networking sites but wonder why you did not know that you had been in Web 1.0 before that? Are you worried about when Web 3.0 is going to arrive and if you are even going to know it and more importantly, whether or not it matters to your ecommerce business? Here is a primer on the evolution of the Internet that will help you keep you on the right page.
Web 1.0:
Most of us did not even really know that the Web had versions until we moved from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0. Web 1.0 is essentially the initial introduction of the Web in a format that people refer to as ”read only”.
Website owners put up information that users searched for and used, such as content, products for sale and so on. In the retail world, this was sort of like putting up a store that people visited and purchased from something of a one way transaction. The process of using the shopping cart, for example, is very much grounded in 1.0 thinking where you use the function that has been presented to accomplish the designated purpose.
Web 2.0:
Web 2.0 is defined by some as the use of specific software types that allow for interaction, but the concept is much broader than software definitions. Web 2.0 is the notion that Web users interact with Web content providers by providing content themselves.
This simple concept underlies most of the new social networking options such as Facebook, My Space, Twitter and the introduction of the blog. This concept also created the notion of customer reviews on ecommerce websites, rich media applications that allow customers to view products in 3D, change colors and create wish lists and registries that can be accessed by other users.
Web 2.0 has taken online retail to a new place in terms of establishing relationships with customers. There is not a good ”bricks and mortar” comparison except maybe ”house parties” where friends invite friends to buy products that they endorse by having a house party to provide the buying opportunity.
In this way, Web 2.0 has revolutionized the way retail is conducted by adding mechanisms to add longer lasting relationships with customers as well as providing them with much more visible and important ways to interact around products.
Web 3.0:
If Web 2.0 is about making connections between people, Web 3.0 is about making connections among information sources. In a Web 3.0 world, the web will keep track of your likes and dislikes so that when you search for a good restaurant, it will know what kind of food you like already (it learns from iterations of previous searches) and search for those types of restaurants first.
Or, if you want to take a trip with a $3,000 budget and you need to know about airlines, hotels, cars, entertainment and where to buy a wedding gift when you get there, you will have to search a number of sites to get that information. On Web 3.0, you can ask a complex question with all the variables you need to balance and the response will be a set of options that take all the factors into consideration, sort of like having a personal assistant.
It is not clear when we will get there though search engines like Bing are trying to make the first steps in that direction. Once we arrive, it will be easier for online retailers to connect with their customers because customers can search using a variety of targeting variables.
The challenge will be for retailers to be sure that they have provided enough detailed information to be picked up on those sophisticated searches.

Jump Start Search Engine Page Ranking By Optimizing Video
By Jane Dawson
As an online retailer you may focus most of your attention on pay per click and organic search engine listings.
You may think that video is only for the big guys who can afford the production costs. You may also think that video loads more slowly so it is a lesser alternative, compared with other strategies.
If you honestly believe that only the big guys can produce video, you must have never taken a look at YouTube where practically every member of the planet has produced a video.
In reality, with some decent lighting, a microphone and a free or inexpensive editing program, you can produce video at an acceptable quality for use on your site. And, even if your product is less inviting than the millions of get rich today products that are excerpted into online video snippets, you can certainly produce video showing your product in use, showing how to assemble it, alternative uses, its use along with accessories that you sell and so on.
Finally, access to broadband is growing so the slow video: is diminishing.
Why should you do this? Because your video is fifty times more likely to get first page ranking on the major search engines than any of your web pages. And that is a huge advantage.
The Forester Blog for Interactive Marketing Professionals recently conducted a study of the major search engines and found that Google in particular blended its search engine results to include visual media (though none really uses images in its search engines at all).
So how do you get your video noticed? First of all, you need to treat them like any other content and optimize the descriptive information.
That means putting key words in the videos filename. You can also put key words into the title, description and tags.
Second, the number of times your video is viewed is very important in achieving high rankings. The best way to get your video seen is to host your video on YouTube then embed the video into your site.
You can also embed links to the video on other landing pages within your site. Search engines will count all of the viewings of the video from all locations, so everything adds up to get you higher ranking.
If you have a number of videos (and you probably should), consider creating a video library on your site and help the search engine spiders find it by creating a video sitemap.
Go to the Google Webmaster Help to learn about Google”s video sitemap feature. This sitemap protocol lets you publish and syndicate online video content to Google so that it can be searched in the Google Video index. Google can crawl the following video file types: .mpg, .mpeg, .mp4, .mov, .wmv, .asf, .avi, .ra, .ram, .rm, .flv.
Optimizing your video is an excellent way to climb the search engine rankings ladder.

Types of Ecommerce Marketing Strategies
By Jimmy Cox
There are many different types of ecommerce marketing strategies that you might be looking for to help your business. These might be to create hype about a company event about to take place, increase traffic to your online business site, improve your page rank for your online site, and do a little damage control.
An ecommerce marketing strategy can consist of many different things. Many of the most common types of marketing offered to companies today include increasing traffic, creating hype, improving page rank, search engine assistance, and even providing damage control.
Increasing traffic is one of the biggest requests with businesses today. Many people suffer of a lack of traffic due to content, offensive content on their site, misguided keywords, and many other issues. It is common for things like this to happen and they don”t even know it.
Most people really have no idea that their website is the reason they haven”t any traffic. An internet marketing strategy for people like this would be to completely revamp their site to provide a more professional site with the proper content.
Content can make or break you when it comes to traffic. Content is responsible for search engine rank, how customers view you, and how professional you look. Good content can help increase traffic and bring in more customers.
Improving page rank also has a lot to do with content but it can also include getting the word out that a business exists. Page rank is important to customers in many circumstances on the web.
Some customers are too afraid to use their credit card on a site with a poor page rank. A good page rank can create instant trust because it means you are well known and popular. Most customers will trust that other people are purchasing too if the pager rank is good.
Getting the word out that a company exists is a common ecommerce marketing strategy. This type of strategy usually is for people that have relied on friends and family members to get the words out that they exist and it just isn”t working.
When you want to spread the word then a professional can help you come up with a plan on how they will go about telling the web about the business. This might include press releases, article postings, and even an email campaign.
Creating hype is another way to get the word out for an ecommerce marketing strategy. Hype is important because you want customers to be curious about who your business is but what you can do for them.
They have to be curious enough to go to your website to check out the site and see what types of things you offer. Hype can be created through blogging, email campaigns, article writing and much more.
Another ecommerce marketing strategy is by search engine marketing. Search engine marketing helps people that are not showing on the search engines at all when they type in relevant keywords to their site. This type of marketing may be a good campaign if you go to as many search engine sites and you cannot find your website.
A professional can help you get on track and listed with decent results through the search engines. Keep in mind that no marketer can offer you a number one position on your site. If someone does offer a number one position then you need to look elsewhere because they are making promises they cannot keep.

Ideas For the Best Business to Start
By Jimmy Cox
Every day I hear the question posed, “What is the best business to start?” Rest assured that the answer to that question is really going to vary based on the person that is answering it. If you are talking to a network marketer that is making a nice income at home, they are going to tell you that it is network marketing.
If you talk to a person that makes a nice living owning their own home cleaning service, they are going to tell that is the business to get involved in. Honestly though, the best business to start is the business that you are going to feel passionate about.
There are going to be some out there that are going to disagree with that statement. That is fine, let them. But it is important that you understand why the above statement is true. Think about someone you know that really enjoys what it is they do. They are excited about their work, their face lights up when they talk about it, you can feel the passion pour out of them… most of all… after talking to them you walk away going, “I need to look into that.”
The passion is what is going to help you be successful. It is going to help you gain prospects and it is going to help you make sales. Think about the last time you went in to buy… just about anything that required the help of a sales person.
Were you ready to buy from the person that could”ve cared less about what it is you were after and what they had to offer… or the person that listened to you and then went “I have got an awesome product for you, it meets all your requirements and has some extras.”
With that being said, you may be wondering than what is the best business to start, so here are some ideas.
* Housecleaning Service - most people would rather pay someone else to come and clean their house for them then do it themselves. The reasons are numerous often it is matter of time and desire. You don”t have to be associated with a big company, you can start your own from home, and it can be just you until you build up clientele.
* Network marketing - this business is easy to start up from the stand point that it won”t cost you much (if anything) and you can do it from home. Network marketing is the selling of a product or service or both. You become part of team, and you build our own team and everyone plays an important role in each other”s success.
* Affiliate marketing - similar to network marketing in that you are promoting a product. The difference here is that you are really not looking to build a team; you are looking to make a sale. There are thousands of companies that offer affiliate programs, which cost you nothing, and you make a percentage off of every sale you generate.
* Driving for Dollars - you can have your car wrapped in advertisements and make anywhere from $300 t0 $3200 a month for just driving. While you may not be able to retire on that money, it is a very nice way to make extra money without having to do much or quit your regular job.

eBay - 7 Ways To Outsell Other Ebook Resellers On Ebay
By Chip Morgan
How would you like to have your car payment or mortgage paid for? Or perhaps you would like to quit your job and work part time from the comfort of your home?
Whatever your dreams are, selling e-books and software with resell or master resell rights can help make them a reality! But what if you are not a savvy internet marketer? Well, eBay is an easy and great place to start. It is also a great source of supplemental income even for seasoned resell rights marketers.
But, with increased competition on eBay among e-book resellers, an effective strategy is a must have to continue to grow your e-book business effectively. Don”t ever let the seemingly low prices and the thought of resell rights saturation discourage you from reaping large financial rewards.
I have been selling e-books and software on eBay for 3 years now and have developed and refined 7 tried and true tactics that will allow you to resell e-books for up to 10 times the price of your competition.
The secret is in the listing title! Below are 7 ways to maximize your traffic, conversion and profit using smart listing strategies.
1. Keyword Rich Listing Title
This tip is not unknown but is still rarely used. Most people who sell e-books with resell rights simply list their item on eBay using the “actual name″ of the product for the listing title.
For example, “James Jackson”s Giveaway Gold” is listed by many sellers by it”s title. In reality this is an e-book on how to build your email list. If you were looking for a guide on how to build your mailing list would you type in “James Jackson”s Giveaway Gold?” Not if you have never heard of such an e-book! It should be listed as “Build Create Make Your Mailing Email List”. This would be a wise use of relevant keywords and phrases which will bring in the greatest amount of traffic to that listing. You can find these targeted keywords with a free keyword search tool.
2. Understand What You Are Selling
If you don”t know what you are selling how can you give it a proper listing title? Be sure to read the sales page that it comes with. Often times you can find useful keywords and phrases in the sales page that will help you list it correctly.
3. Check Out Your Competitor”s Listing Titles
Do this before you pick your listing title. As you start writing down possible keywords and phrases to use in your title, cross check them on eBay to see if any other of the same products pull up. Be sure to choose the keywords and phrases that give you the fewest competitors.
4. Use Misspellings To Your Advantage
People”s inability to spell means money for you. For example, a product that has to do with “Google Adsense″ can also be written as “Google Ad Sense″,”Google Adcense″,”Google Adsence″ or even “Goggle Adsense.”
5. Cross Positioning
A great example of this would be having an e-book on coin collecting but listing it as coin collecting with metal detector. There may be nothing in your e-book on metal detectors but no doubt anyone who pulls up metal detectors will see your e-book on coins and bingo, you just created a niche listing with no competitors.
6. Name Recognition Tie-In
This is a great way to pull in brand name recognition traffic even though you aren”t selling the product with the name. An example of this would be if you were selling an e-book on how to create a pay per click search engine. You could list the title as something like “Make A Pay Per Click Search Engine Like Google Adwords.”
Another benefit to using all of these techniques is that often times the resellers won”t find you very easily. Resellers will be looking at other resellers and trying to copy their titles while undercutting their listing price. Because most of them are looking for the actual name of the product, you will be virtually invisible to them.
7. Put Your E-book On CD
Now that you have positioned yourself on eBay away from the rest, burn your e-books to CD. Why on a CD? You can increase the price as well as charge shipping and handling. You can easily charge $4.99 for shipping when in fact it costs less than half that to pay for the CD and shipping materials.
There you have it. Now you can be the e-book reseller you have always wanted to be and start pulling in easy cash, the smart way!

The 3 Biggest Internet Marketing Copywriting Secrets
By Adam Cheng
If you are serious about becoming successful with internet marketing, you need to spend time looking at what other successful marketers are doing. This is especially true of copywriting.
While many of the techniques that successful marketers are using are hidden behind the scenes, their copywriting is right out there in plain site. You can look to see what elements they include, how the sales letter is constructed, and the general look and feel of their writing.
What you don”t see is the techniques they use to construct their sales letters. There are a few of these techniques that internet marketing gurus use that can help take you sales copy to a higher level.
1.) Have Someone Else Read Your Sales Copy.
Many less experienced writers do not do a good job of re-reading their own work. You can quickly spot these copywriters when you read their sales letters. They are full of grammar and spelling errors, and their copy is choppy with no flow. Most of these mistakes could be corrected if the copy was read by someone after it was written.
Those that do re-read the sales letter will try to get away with silently reading the copy. The problem with that is your eyes have a tendency to see what your brain tells them to see. When you read your own writing silently your eyes may not detect errors that would be obvious to someone else
Reading your own sales letter aloud is a step in the right direction, but even then you have a tendency to skim over errors. The problem of not seeing the errors still exists to a certain extent.
When you have someone else read your copywriting aloud you get an opportunity to listen to what you have written. You can hear if the copy makes sense the way it is written. You also have a chance to get feedback from someone that is a little more objective.
2.) Write your Sales Letters Out by Hand.
Putting pen to paper is a very personal experience; much more so than typing on a computer keyboard. One of the keys to successful internet marketing is making personal contact with your audience. The more you can make that contact with your words the more successful you will be.
Most experienced typists can type faster than they write. When you write your message out be hand you force your brain to slow down, and you have more of a chance to think through what you are saying. When that happens you can craft your words more carefully to make the necessary connections.
3.) Be the Target Audience
The biggest step you can take to making personal contact with your audience is to step into their shoes. You need to show that you can empathize with them, and that you truly do understand their wants and needs.
The best way to reach your audience is to tell a story with your copywriting. You need to do more than list the features and benefits of your product or service. You need to be able to let your readers know that you understand their problems, and that you can offer real solutions.
Copywriting for internet marketing is a skill that can be learned. Once oyu know the elements that need to be included, it just requires time to practice developing the skills you have learned. Look for way to continue to learn, and then to put what you have learned into practice. When you do that, your online business will begin to prosper.

Is Adsense Still a Viable Money Making Channel?
By Jason James
Back in early 2006, it was easy to make a lot of money with Adsense. All you had to do was to create a site, throw any old content on it, and of course, scatter Adsense ads all over your page. Later that year, Google implemented changes to its algorithm which affected both Adwords and Adsense advertisers. The changes, which were put in place to enforce a level of quality on the content in Google, caused some chaos in the Internet marketing industry where many people were losing a huge stream of income. Hence, the cries that Adsense was dead.
It is a common misconception that one can simply put up a website nowadays and earn any significant income with Adsense. It is still quite possible to make a lot of money with Adsense, but first, here are a couple criteria that an Adsense site has to meet before it can become profitable:
* There must be high quality and unique content on your site. Not only does Google frown upon rehashed content, your human visitors will end up leaving your site in a hurry and will therefore not have the time to click on your Adsense ads.
* There must be high quality and targeted traffic to your site. To get targeted traffic to your site, you must properly optimize your site for your desired keywords and you must also use only legitimate traffic sources. Doing SEO and running relevant PPC ads are two of the best ways of getting a high quantity of high quality traffic. Do not expect to make money by purchasing so-called “guaranteed visitors” from traffic brokers.
A factor which may affect your site’’s earnings with Adsense is its keywords. To understand this point, you must first understand that Adsense ads are the same as Adwords ads except they are visible in the content network instead of the search network. There is no set amount that a clicked ad for a certain keyword pays out. This depends on how much the advertiser is paying per click and also on the quality and ranking of your site. Essentially, the higher the advertiser is paying per click for a certain keyword, the higher the payout is to you if someone clicks on their ad through your site.
Adsense is most certainly not dead. Those who claim this are those who have not made the necessary adjustments to the changes that Google made back in 2006. To summarize, there are three things that you should have in order to make money with Adsense: high quality content, targeted traffic, and the right keywords.
If you have good content, your visitors will appreciate it and possibly return often. The search engines can also tell when you have good content and will reward you for having it by boosting your site’’s rankings. Make sure you choose the right keywords such that you”ll be targeting a niche which is searched for, but also targeting keywords which you can realistically get a lot of traffic from instead of butting heads with the best for competitive keywords.
As long as you follow these guidelines, you”ll find that Adsense is still very much alive and can be very profitable for you.

How to Make Money With CPA (Cost-Per-Action) Networks
By Jason James
Cost-per-action (CPA) marketing is a type of affiliate marketing which pays affiliates for every lead that completes a certain required action such as submitting an email address or zip code. Traditional affiliate marketing requires effort to persuade a visitor to buy a product you”re promoting to earn you a commission, but it can be a lot easier to earn with CPA marketing because you won”t need to sell anything. Companies that engage in CPA marketing often pay hefty sums, $20-$50 or more per lead, in return for sending a visitor who submits their information to the company. These companies can afford to pay such generous commissions in return for a lead who tries out a free offer because their marketing funnel is so profitable.
The first step towards making money with CPA networks is to get accepted by them. CPA networks do not work like Clickbank where all that is required to promote a product is an account. CPA networks are always on the lookout for skilled marketers who intend on following through with their campaigns, not deadbeat affiliates. Since most applications will look average, most will be rejected. If your application gets rejected, don”t worry. Account managers have nothing personal against applicants, but they do get swamped with applications. If you do not have a track record with CPA, then you won”t stand out from the crowd and will probably get rejected. The best thing to do in this case would be to personally contact the account manager and tell them how serious you are about following through. Chances are, you”ll be approved because they”ll recognize that you”re serious from the fact that you made the effort to call.
Once you”re approved by a network, you”ll need to pick an offer to promote. Some offers convert better and others pay more per lead. Once you”ve picked a good offer, then traffic generation is the last piece of the puzzle that you”ll need in order to start making money with CPA. If you want to test the profitability of an offer, try running some pay-per-click ads for it. PPC is good because the traffic comes very soon after you create your campaign. It is also good because you can set a low budget and a short timeframe for the ad to run so you can get a sampling of the market.
In addition to driving paid traffic, you can also drive free traffic via a blog, articles, and search engine optimization. CPA is all about arbitrage: just how much are you willing to pay to get a payout? Doing PPC advertising can be a mistake is you don”t know how to do it. If you choose to run PPC ads to point to your CPA offers, then make sure you constantly test and tweak your campaigns so that you can consistently keep your cost-per-click low and therefore have a larger profit margin.
CPA marketing is much more lucrative than traditional affiliate marketing is done correctly. Once you are able to drive consistent traffic to your website and keep your costs of acquiring that traffic down, then you will not only make a lot of money, but you”ll have the necessary knowledge and experience to duplicate your efforts and easily scale your business.
